Out with the psychic channelling in with computers that read minds! Is that really our future, will new technology currently in the pipeline pick up our thoughts and search the internet without us lifting a finger?
Of course subtle energies used in psychic channelling will be hard to substitute with a computer, how can a computer understand how we feel, how can a computer tune into our auric field, how can a computer express empathy, sympathy and kindness? How can a computer predict? Well, they can’t, not yet that is, but the computer science department at Cambridge University is determined to create computers that will read our minds, and robots that will express human emotions.
The scenario is as horrific as Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World” Think of it; we could be overrun with robots pretending to be humans. In fact not only robots but our computer screens could read our minds and control our lifestyles. Psychic channelling might even be outlawed as a result, and the future scenario could be dehumanisation and even worse.
But we are own worst enemies, it is hard for us to do without our laptops or iPhones. We dig communication without realising that it is not only about what we say, it is how we react as per our body language our facial expressions, the sound of our voice or the perfume we emanate, which obviously a computer could never imitate, or could it? It looks like Professor Peter Robinson’s and his scary team is determined to build emotional computers no matter what!
Envisage trying to send an email via a computer with an inferiority complex, and going on line only to find your computer is in such a bad mood it switches itself off. If you ask your computer to research a subject it is not interested in, it might throw a temper tantrum. You go into a dating site for example, and your computer gets jealous and fills your screen with wiggly lines. If a computer’s emotional controls ran amuck, it could even have a nervous breakdown like the self destructive HAL in the movie 2001 Space Odyssey directed by Stanley Kubrick.
Notwithstanding the above, science soldiers on! In fact, Intel technicians are well into the intricacies of our brain matter and how to convert our thoughts and feelings into something a computer could understand. Thankfully, knowing the complexities of the human brain, it will take quite a long time to do that!
Dean Pomerleau, of Intel Laboratories, said “currently, the devices required to get sufficient detail on brain activity were bulky, expensive magnetic resonance scanners, like those used in hospitals”. But Pomerleau went on to assure us that smaller pieces of equipment could be used, like headsets, for example.
The result? A George Orwell 1984 mind control lifestyle. Imagine if technology enabled you to read anyone’s thoughts by just pressing a few buttons on your iPad. Or imagine not being able get into your favourite night club without an internally inserted chip under your skin? Bouncers will lose their jobs; airport security will have had its day, office workers would spy on each other’s work projects, celebs would be even more hounded than they are now, psychics would be on the dole and this world would be a nightmare to live in. The worst scenario would be trying to chat up a dodo who is half human half computer, Blade Runner here we come!
